Man under police guard after FPO searches, investigations into recent shootings continue - Operation Talon

A man has been arrested during a string of Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) searches yesterday, as police continue extensive investigations into recent public place shootings in Sydney's west.

Detectives from Auburn and Ryde Police Area Commands are investigating public place shootings at Berala, Regents Park, and Ryde on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 May 2019.

As part of inquiries, Operation Talon – assisted by the South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad, North West Metropolitan Operation Support Group, and various Metropolitan Police Area Commands – conducted nine FPO searches at homes in West Ryde, Berala, Granville, Auburn, Ermington, Guildford, and Rydalmere yesterday (Thursday 30 May 2019).

After serving a FPO on a man at a Granville home, he became aggressive towards police, allegedly assaulting a male Senior Constable, before he was arrested while still attempting to assault police.

The Senior Constable was taken to Westmead Hospital to be treated for a fractured nose and lacerations, and has since been released.

The 22-year-old Granville man was also taken to Westmead Hospital to be treated for minor injuries sustained during the arrest, where he remains under police guard.

During a search of the same Granville home, police seized two knives concealed in metal purpose-made cylinders.

Detectives from Ryde and Auburn Police Area Command will continue their extensive investigations into the shootings, and Operation Talon will continue assisting with proactive policing strategies.

Operation Talon is a proactive policing strategy to prevent and disrupt public act of violence, including shootings, and target the possession and supply of illicit firearms.

Anyone with information about possession or distribution of illicit firearms is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
