Man wanted for assaulting police and fleeing custody apprehended in Victoria

Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives have extradited a man from Victoria after he allegedly assaulted a police officer then fled custody in the state's Murrumbidgee region earlier this year.

About 12.30pm on Friday 25 March 2022, a 27-year-old man allegedly assaulted a female sergeant while in custody at Griffith Police Station, before fleeing in a waiting vehicle.

Initial inquiries conducted by Murrumbidgee Police District led to the arrest of a 42-year-old woman at a home in Griffith later that day. The woman was later charged over her alleged role in the incident and remains before the courts.

Attempts to locate the man continued, and the matter was subsequently referred to investigators from the State Crime Command's Robbery and Serious Crime Squad's Strike Force Cobra.

Following extensive inquiries, a 27-year-old man was arrested with the assistance of Victoria Police in Robinvale, Victoria, about 10.30am yesterday (Wednesday 11 May 2022).

NSW Police Force officers subsequently applied for and were granted the man's extradition to NSW at Mildura Magistrate's Court later that day.

He was escorted to Dareton Police Station, where two outstanding warrants were executed.

Additionally, the man was served with a Court Attendance Notice for the offence of possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority and possess prohibited drug.

The Robinvale man was refused bail to appear at Wentworth Local Court today (Thursday 12 May 2022).

Strike Force Cobra was established by the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad in November 2021 to locate and apprehend violent and high-risk fugitives.
