From potholes to uneven footpaths, our local roads are one of the most common concerns raised by Bayside residents.
Our new Road Management Plan was recently adopted following community feedback, which included an online survey and public submissions.
The newly adopted plan outlines how we will manage more than 376 km of local roads and over 430 km of footpaths, plus associated assets like drainage, signage, and kerbs.
Bayside Mayor, Cr Hanna El Mouallem said improving the fundamentals was a priority for the new Council.
"We are investing more money in the improvement and maintenance of our vital roads, footpaths and share spaces," said Cr El Mouallem.
"By working together, we can keep our roads accessible and in good condition for everyone."
Setting standards
The plan includes a commitment to clear service standards for repairing potholes, footpath hazards, such as raised concrete, and blocked drains.
The plan improves our services standards by increasing proactive inspections of footpaths in major activity centres every 3 months, and inspecting footpaths in high volume areas such as the Bay Trail and in front of hospitals to every 6 months.,
Following a pilot process undertaken in 24/25 we have also now reduced the point at which Council will repair an identified defect from 25mm to 20mm in both of these categories so issues will be picked up and repaired earlier.
The plan also covers more than 23,000 pit lids and nearly 10,000 traffic signs, highlighting the scale of daily maintenance happening across Bayside.

Which roads are managed by us?
While most local roads are managed by Council, arterial roads such as the Nepean Highway, Hampton Street and Bluff Road are maintained by the Victorian Government.

Report directly to Council
To support our work, we urge residents to use the Report a Problem tool to log issues like potholes, blocked drains or footpath hazards.
Submissions go directly into our maintenance system for quicker response times.
"Reporting directly to Council can help us identify and fix issues faster," said Cr El Mouallem.
