Man critical after assault at Newcastle, NSW

A man has been charged after an alleged serious assault at Newcastle last week., NSW Police say

Police have been told about 11.40pm on Saturday 21 April 2018, a 20-year-old man was crossing Union Lane, when a Holden Commodore stopped, and he began arguing with a man inside.

The man allegedly got out of the Commodore and ran towards him and punched him once to the face.

As a result, he fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

Police will allege the man from the Holden then produced a bottle and threatened members of the public who attempted to intervene.

Newcastle City Police Area Command officers were patrolling the area and saw the injured man unconsciousness on the footpath.

The man who allegedly threw the punch fled the area as police approached.

Officers contacted paramedics and he was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, where he remains.

Following inquiries, a 29-year-old man was arrested at Cabarita.

He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 28 April 2018).
