Manning River Underbore Reaches Major Milestone

MidCoast Council

A permanent water supply will soon be restored to Wingham, with contractors currently installing a new pipeline that will supply the township directly from Bootawa Water Treatment Plant.

This follows the successful drilling of a 750m bore hole under the Manning River to make way for the new pipeline.

MidCoast Council's Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said it was a major milestone for the project, which had progressed without any significant delays.

"There is always a risk that equipment can fail or something can go wrong when drilling a hole as large as the one we required, especially considering the layers of rock that the drill rig had to get through," said Mr Scott.

"But thankfully we haven't had any major issues and as a result the project will soon be finished, which is a great outcome for the people of Wingham."

Once the new pipeline has been installed, contractors will work quickly to connect it to the water network.

This is expected to be completed by mid-December, restoring a permanent water supply to Wingham and securing the capacity of the system to supply Taree and the north-eastern section of the network, seven months after the previous pipeline was damaged during the May flood.
