Tatauranga umanga Māori - Statistics on Māori businesses: March 2025 quarter presents information on one subset of Māori businesses that contribute to our country's economy. This release includes data on Māori authorities and related businesses. It does not cover all Māori businesses in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Māori authorities are defined as businesses that receive, manage, and/or administer assets held in common ownership by iwi and Māori. Māori authorities are largely identified through their tax codes as registered with Inland Revenue. Any business within a Māori authority ownership group is also included for the purposes of Tatauranga umanga Māori.

Key facts

In the March 2025 quarter, around 1,450 Māori authorities and related businesses were in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population.

All figures are actual values and are not adjusted for seasonal effects.

In the March 2025 quarter compared with the March 2024 quarter:

  • the total value of sales by Māori authorities was $1,078 million, down $0.6 million (0.1 percent)
  • the total value of purchases by Māori authorities was $742 million, down $18.9 million (2.5 percent)
  • the total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities was 11,870, down 170 jobs (1.4 percent)
  • the total value of earnings by employees of Māori authorities was $212 million, down $8.7 million (4.0 percent)
  • Māori authorities exported $219 million worth of goods, up $10 million (4.9 percent).

Business financial data

In the March 2025 quarter, Māori authorities and related businesses in:

  • primary industries had $380 million in sales and $269 million in purchases
  • goods-producing industries had $196 million in sales and $148 million in purchases
  • services industries had $502 million in sales and $325 million in purchases.

Due to the small number of Māori authorities in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population, some industries have been grouped together to allow more data to be released.

  • Primary industries include businesses involved in farming, forestry, fishing, and mining.
  • Goods-producing industries include businesses involved in manufacturing; utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and waste services; and construction.
  • Services industries include businesses involved in health care and social assistance, real estate, travel agencies, and management services ‒ for example, head offices.

For the March 2025 quarter compared with the March 2024 quarter, the total value of sales by Māori authorities and related businesses fell $0.6 million.

By industry, the largest movements were:

  • professional, scientific, technical, administrative, and support services, down $18 million (13 percent)
  • goods-producing industries, up $12 million (6.6 percent)
  • primary industries, up $11 million (3.0 percent).

Business employment data

For Māori authorities and related businesses in the March 2025 quarter compared with the March 2024 quarter:

  • the number of filled jobs for men was 5,250, down 100 jobs (2.0 percent)
  • the number of filled jobs for women was 6,620, down 70 jobs (1.0 percent)
  • the value of total earnings for men was $104 million, down $4.4 million (4.1 percent)
  • the value of total earnings for women was $108 million, down $4.3 million (3.8 percent).

The total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities and related businesses fell by 170 jobs in the March 2025 quarter compared with the March 2024 quarter. The movements by industry group were:

  • primary industries, down 110 jobs (3.8 percent)
  • goods-producing industries, down 30 jobs (3.5 percent)
  • services industries, down 30 jobs (0.4 percent).

Total earnings for employees of Māori authorities and related businesses fell $8.7 million to $212 million in the March 2025 quarter compared with the March 2024 quarter. The movements in earnings by industry group were:

  • primary industries, down $0.9 million (1.6 percent)
  • goods-producing industries, down $0.2 million (1.5 percent)
  • services industries, down $7.6 million (5.1 percent).

Goods exports

In the March 2025 quarter compared with the March 2024 quarter, the value of:

  • total goods exports by Māori authorities was $219 million, up $10 million (4.9 percent)
  • exports of milk powder, butter, and cheese was $58 million, up $1.3 million (2.3 percent)
  • exports of all other goods was $161 million, up $9 million (5.9 percent); other goods exported by Māori authorities include kaimoana (seafood), meat, machinery, and wine.

Data updates to Tatauranga umanga Māori

Changes in business ownership and structure, including the sale of subsidiaries and acquisition of new businesses, are reflected in these results. These adjustments can lead to some businesses being reclassified into different industry groups, or businesses being added to, or removed from, the population. Each business is categorised based on the industry that most accurately reflects its primary activity for the reporting period.

Data on Māori authorities presented in this release are based on the revised population used for the 2023 annual release.

Counts of Māori authorities in the annual release are based on business demography data. Due to different levels of coverage, the counts presented in this quarterly release will differ from those published in the annual release.
