Northern Territory Water Police are reminding boaties to check weather conditions prior to travel after two boats capsized in rough seas on Wednesday night.
Water Police were alerted to a person who was forced to abandon his boat and swim to shore after the vessel was swamped at Shoal Bay. Members launched a rescue water craft and support patrol dinghy and retrieved the man stranded between Buffalo and Micket Creeks, Northern Territory Police say.
At the same time Water Police came across two people stranded in the water after their vessel had been swamped and capsized. They were rescue and returned to the Buffalo Creek Boat Ramp.
A third distress call was received from Fannie Bay after attempts were made to re-float a yacht on the high tide having broken its moorings and washed ashore the previous day. People ended up in the water in the rough seas but fortunately self-recovered and were all accounted for.
Senior Sergeant Stefan Herold said fortunately everyone was recovered on this occasion but it does serve as a timely reminder to all boat users the importance of checking the weather conditions, especially during this time of the year.
"Make sure you have the required safety equipment and let someone know your plans, in particular where you are going and when you will be back.
"Plan ahead and stay safe on the water," he said.
