Marshall Government delivers new Tonsley station

The Marshall Liberal Government is delivering $8 million in the 2019-20 State Budget for the construction of the new Tonsley train station.

As announced in 2017, the current Tonsley station cannot remain in its current location as the Flinders Link project will involve the elevation of the train bridge to clear Sturt and Main South Road.

The Marshall Government is currently delivering on an election commitment to consult the local community on the location of the new Tonsley train station.

"The Marshall Government is continuing to build South Australia, investing in roads, rail and other key infrastructure projects across the state," said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll.

"The 2019-20 State Budget will deliver $8 million to build the new Tonsley train station.

"This is in addition to the $125 million Extension of the Tonsley Rail Line to the Flinders Medical Centre project which is being jointly and equally funded in partnership with the Federal Morrison Government.

"We now have all the funding in place to build this important piece of public transport infrastructure.

"This builds on the Marshall Government's significant investment in public transport infrastructure, including securing an additional $220 million Commonwealth contribution for the $615 million Gawler line electrification project and investing $33.5 million for Park 'n' Rides along the O-Bahn as announced last year."

Member for Elder Carolyn Power said that consultation with the local community about future options for Tonsley station was ongoing.

"Prior to the election we promised we would work with the community and consult regarding the community's needs and preferences in light of the former Labor Government announcing the removal of the current Tonsley station," said Mrs Power.

"To have delivered on our commitment and now announce funding for a new rail station in the area is a big win for the local community.

"It's important that the community is able to have their say, share their ideas and concerns and discuss their needs.

"It's absolutely fantastic that the community's voice has been taken into account as the Extension of the Tonsley Rail Line to the Flinders Medical Centre project progresses.

"The extension of the Tonsley rail line to the Flinders education and medical precinct will connect the community to the hospital and university via the train line.

"Funding for a new station to be built, taking into account the community's feedback, means residents will also be able to not only access the CBD."
