Orange City Council has welcomed the announcement of Australian Government funding to establish accommodation for youth at risk of homelessness in Orange.
The project will be delivered as part of a $100 million investment in new crisis, transitional and youth housing projects across Australia, through the Housing Australia Future Fund - Crisis & Transitional Program.
It will consist of 17 self-contained transitional dwellings within walking distance to employment hubs, TAFE Orange Campus, public transport, retail centres and recreational amenities. The project involves the adaptive reuse and conversion of a vacant aged care facility.
Orange Mayor Tony Mileto welcomed the investment and the positive impact it would have on our community.
"This project will provide valuable support and a place to call home for young people as they stay connected to education, training and employment, and break the cycle of homelessness," Cr Mileto said.
"Repurposing an existing facility is a smart way to meet urgent needs while making use of existing infrastructure. We welcome this investment and the dignity and security it will provide for those who need it most."
Orange City Councillor David Mallard said this was a fantastic step forward for Orange.
"Every young person deserves a safe, secure place to live, and this project will help make that a reality," Cr Mallard said.
"Investing in transitional housing is not just about bricks and mortar - it's about giving people the stability they need to build a future."
The Australian Government funding will be delivered in partnership with Housing Australia and will support the delivery of 19 projects across the country, including 7 youth projects and 12 projects for women and children escaping family and domestic violence.
Minister for Housing and Homelessness Clare O'Neil said: "These new crisis, transitional and youth housing projects will give more women, children and younger Australians a safe place to turn when they need it most.
"Keeping people safe - particularly those most vulnerable - is one of the highest duties of government."
