Mayor's Christmas Tree Appeal raises tens of thousands for residents in need

Townsville residents and businesses have been digging deep to support the 2018 Mayor's Christmas Tree Appeal with over $80,000 raised so far.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said she is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the community.

"This year we have raised more than $80,000, and with a couple of weeks left, I hope we can raise even more," Cr Hill said.

"These donations are going to make a real difference to locals doing it tough this festive season.

"I'd really like to thank everyone that has supported the Christmas Tree Appeal so far, all contributions make a real difference to the Townsville community."

Cr Hill said the money would go towards hampers that will be provided to locals in need this Christmas.

"Money raised in the Appeal goes to creating these hampers which will be distributed to locals who may be struggling or would otherwise go without," Cr Hill said.

"We will be collecting donations right up until the hampers are distributed the week before Christmas – I encourage everyone to consider donating and help bring joy to others this festive season."

Southern Cross Austereo will also be supporting the Mayor's Christmas Tree Appeal with a Toy Drive this Friday.
