Mayor Urges Boost in Financial Aid for Mid-City

MidCoast Council

MidCoast Council Mayor Claire Pontin is again calling for a better deal for the people of the MidCoast affected so disastrously by the floods.

Cr Pontin urged for more to be done urgently.

"The State government granted Category D funding for Primary Producers, but the assistance to the MidCoast area seems to have stopped there. Much more is required, and urgently," she said.

"We now have a much better picture of the extent of the damage caused by the floods.

"The direct losses to businesses may be up to $24m and the indirect and ongoing impacts to the whole retail and business sector are going to be far greater.

"For householders, over 440 houses were severely impacted or destroyed with over 1,000 homes damaged in some way."

The Mayor has been calling for access to onsite temporary housing, and a complete Housing Assistance Program that includes grants for home raising, repairs, rebuilds, and relocation costs.

For businesses, Cr Pontin is calling for access to larger clean up and restocking grants, flexible loan arrangements, further flood drainage studies and mitigation works, collaboration between all levels of government and the business communities in Wingham and Taree to revitalise the CBDs.

Over the past week, the Mayor has renewed these requests to Ministers and the Reconstruction Authority.

"I am simply asking for our residents and businesses to be provided with the same level of support that has been afforded to other NSW regions hit by disasters in recent years." Cr Pontin explained.
