The new Priority Start Policy meets the McGowan Government's Plan for Jobs commitment to increase the number of apprentices and trainees on State Government building, construction and maintenance contracts.
The McGowan Government is working to ensure there is a sustainable local supply of skilled workers for the building and construction industry by encouraging industry to invest in apprentices and trainees.
Under the policy, all head contractors awarded State Government building, construction and maintenance contracts will be required to meet a target training rate across the combined construction trades workforce of their company and all subcontractors used for the contract.
This policy applies to State Government building, construction and maintenance contracts valued over $5 million (including GST), resulting from tenders released from today (April 1).
The Department of Training and Workforce Development will support the whole-of-government implementation of the policy.
The Priority Start Policy replaces the previous government's Building Training Policy.

As noted by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"Setting target training rates on State Government building, construction and maintenance contracts will support a strong training culture within the building and construction industry.
"For example, the new $428 million museum project has contributed to the employment of around 100 apprentices and trainees with the managing contractor Multiplex and its subcontractors.
"The implementation of this policy is just one of the ways the McGowan Government is delivering on its commitment to rebuild the training sector and boost employment opportunities for apprentices and trainees.
"We know apprenticeships and traineeships are important for the ongoing growth and success of business and industry in Western Australia."
