Melbourne Makes History With NFL Blockbuster

VIC Premier

Melbourne has made sporting history - with 100,021 fans packing the MCG for the first NFL regular season game in the Asia-Pacific.

The blockbuster clash between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers attracted fans from more than 30 countries, with almost half of ticket holders travelling from interstate or overseas.

The crowd was the second largest ever for an NFL regular-season game outside the United States and the seventh largest in NFL history.

Blockbuster audiences tuned in across Australia and around the world, with the Netflix and ESPN broadcast numbers still coming in, while the free-to-air broadcast on Network Seven reached 2.19 million viewers.

The NFL has also put Melbourne in front of a huge global audience, with more than 13,000 domestic media mentions of the game recorded by 6:00pm Friday.

It's also the MCG's sixth attendance of more than 100,000 in the last five years, highlighting the boost major events provide to the visitor economy.

According to NAB, more than $300 million in spending is expected across Melbourne's CBD, Docklands and MCG precinct - with fans filling hotels, restaurants, pubs and shops across the game weekend.

Melbourne hotel occupancy soared to 92 per cent on game eve and 83 per cent on game day, an uplift of 25 percentage points and 13 percentage points respectively.

Melbourne is now the first city in the world to host an NFL regular-season game, a Formula One Grand Prix and a tennis Grand Slam - another global sporting first for Australia's sporting capital.

Victoria's major events calendar generated $3.64 billion in economic impact in 2025 and attracted close to 8 million attendances, supporting almost 17,000 jobs across the sector and broader visitor economy.

More than 848,000 people travelled from interstate and overseas to attend major events in Victoria last year.

From the MCG to Melbourne's hotels, restaurants and businesses, major events are delivering for Victorians and showing the world why Melbourne is Australia's sporting capital.

As stated by Minister for Major Events Anthony Carbines

"100,021 fans packed the MCG, the world watched Melbourne and thousands of visitors came to Victoria to be part of history - this is what a major event looks like."

"This is exactly why we go after the world's biggest events - they bring visitors to Victoria, put money into our businesses, support jobs and showcase Melbourne to millions around the world."

As stated by Minister for Tourism Natalie Suleyman

"The NFL has put Melbourne in front of millions of potential visitors around the world, while fans from across Australia and overseas have experienced everything our city has to offer."
