Men to appear in court over penguin burrow damage, SA

Two men have been reported after a penguin burrow was damaged on Granite Island, according to SA Police.

Police will allege that between 8pm and 9pm on 24 February, three men caused damage to the burrow and harassed two penguin chicks by handling them.

One of the penguins was recovered by animal welfare volunteers and the other chick moved away from the area, but is not believed to be injured.

A 25-year-old Hackham West man and a 25-year-old Myponga man were reported for interfere or harass a protected animal. They will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Enquiries continue to identify a third man involved in the incident, and police ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Superintendent Craig Wall, Officer in Charge of the Hills Fleurieu Local Service Area says, "Police and I'm sure the community are very disappointed that anyone would harass, harm or interfere with the Granite Island penguins. Damaging their burrows and handling these protected animals can cause them great harm and distress. Police ask anyone seeing behaviour that may harass or harm the Granite Island penguin population in any way to immediately call the Police on 131444."
