A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been posthumously notified in a 29-year-old man from metropolitan Adelaide, who passed away last week.
The strain has been identified as serotype W.
Multiple people who had close contact with the man have been identified, and five people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.
Meningococcal health information is being distributed to other contacts in accordance with the Invasive MeningococcalDisease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: NationalGuidelines for Public Health Units.
This is the first case of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year.
A total of five cases were reported in 2020. Of the five cases, three were serogroup B and two were serogroup Y.
