The Casey TAC L2P Learner Driver Mentor program has been successfully running for 12 years. It has helped many young people in Casey secure their P-plates, opening up employment and wellbeing opportunities for these drivers and their families.
Chioma Anyadoro applied for the Casey L2P program in May 2019. She lives in a single parent family with two younger brothers and one older sister. Chioma's mother is a full-time nurse who works long hours. One of Chioma's brothers has special needs and needs to be constantly watched. Considering her situation, Chioma's application was prioritised and she was paired with L2P driver mentor, William Mass.
William says he joined the L2P program in 2019, after seeing an advertisement in the local paper, because he wanted to help young people to get their drivers licences.
"I was very pleased with Chioma's driving techniques and her ability to read the traffic. I enjoyed teaching her and seeing how she responded to new challenges. I'm happy to be in the program and to help young people achieve good driving skills", he said.
Chioma said that she loved the L2P program and really enjoyed driving with William.
"It was great to get out and drive and have someone willing to give up their free time to help me get my license," she said.
"William is great: he's enthusiastic, friendly, encouraging and fun to be around. He took me to so many locations, enabling me to be more comfortable driving in multiple conditions.
"I would 100 per cent recommend the Casey L2P program to other young people whose parents are unable to assist them in increasing their hours."
William and Chioma are just two participants in the program. The Casey L2P program has an amazing group of volunteer mentors who give their time and energy to help others in need. Because of this, over the last three months, our program has seen 15 learners successfully gain their P-plates. We would like to extend our thanks to the volunteers for making this possible.
