The existing Merimbula Boardwalk.
30 July 2025
The long-anticipated upgrade of the Merimbula Boardwalk has reached a major milestone, with the Development Application officially approved by the Southern Regional Planning Panel.
"It's fantastic to finally have the green light to upgrade this much-loved boardwalk," Council's Planning and Projects Coordinator, Amelia Baum said.
"This upgrade means more visitors discovering what makes Merimbula special and better opportunities for locals to reconnect with this beautiful place.
"With planning approval confirmed, we're working to finalise documentation in line with the development conditions.
"Our next step will be calling for tenders in early August, with hopes to have the construction contract awarded by the end of the year and works commencing mid 2026.
"We're excited to share this news with the community."
Following recent damage to the existing boardwalk caused by tidal surges and high winds, repair activities have commenced on the eastern section of the boardwalk. These temporary repairs are to get the boardwalk reopened again before on site works to fully replace the entire boardwalk start in mid-2026.
"We will provide a further update to the community once we have more clarity on the progress and timeframe for completion," said Ms Baum.
"We wish to again thank the community for their ongoing interest and support as this important project progresses."
The Merimbula Boardwalk and Foreshore Path upgrade project will enhance the experience of one of the shire's most popular attractions, supporting accessibility, environmental sustainability and tourism.
