Message To Maccabean

Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, Assistant Minister for the Public Service, Assistant Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations

We begin 2026 carrying the heartbreaking grief and shock following the devastating antisemitic terrorist attacks at Bondi Beach.

Sunday 14 December 2025 will be remembered as the darkest day in Australia's recent history. An attack on innocent Jewish Australians who had gathered in celebration.

This has affected us all. The anger, pain and sorrow felt across Australia will be with us the rest of our lifetimes.

My thoughts are with those grieving, those injured and traumatised, and their loved ones anxiously awaiting their recovery. I pay tribute to the bravery of those who responded - police, paramedics and civilians.

The conversations I have held have broken my heart, and the fear and distress in Perth is significant. So is the determination to ensure the Australia we build together is inclusive and welcoming for this community, and all others.

I say clearly: we stand with the Jewish community here in Perth. There is no place here for antisemites, terrorists, or hatred.

For too long we have seen inappropriate protests, chants and activities outside our schools and hate-filled graffiti on Perth streets. I have consistently called out the protests at schools and activity on our university campuses. I look forward to seeing David Gonski's work, ensuring Jewish Australians can access an education free from fear.

Australia is strongest when we refuse to let hatred define us. An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on all Australians. The people of Perth stand together in solidarity with our local Jewish community.

Amidst this hate, extending the hand of kindness has never been more important.

For those looking to help, small actions matter. Check in on those who live alone, reach out to your neighbours, offer a lift or a meal to someone in need, or reach out to a local community group who could use your support. In this new year, let's choose hope over fear, and kindness over division.

Hope overcomes hate. Light overcomes darkness.

The hope of all Australians is stronger than the hate of these evil antisemitic terrorists.

I wish you and your loved ones a hopeful, healthy start to 2026. May this year bring light to us all.

Patrick Gorman is the Federal Member for Perth and the Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister.
