Millions of emails leaked in social media hack

Twitter is reportedly facing a significant data breach, with email addresses of more than 200 million users posted on a hacking forum for free.

The breach could lead to "a lot of hacking, targeted phishing and doxxing," warns Alon Gal, co-founder of cybersecurity firm Hudson Rock.

Twitter has not commented on the breach, which is thought to have occurred as early as 2021 before Elon Musk took over the company.

It is currently unclear whether the hacked data is legitimate, as it is common for data breaches to include duplicate, old, or fake information.

In October, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion. Much of Musk's wealth is tied to Tesla shares, which have declined in value by over half since he acquired Twitter.

To finance the purchase, Musk sold nearly $23 billion worth of Tesla stock since April 2022, when he began accumulating shares in Twitter. He has lost his title as the world's wealthiest individual.
