Minister Courtney doesn't understand TAFE

Tasmanian Labor

Education Minister Sarah Courtney failed to answer serious questions regarding TAFE in Budget Estimates today.

Shadow Minister for TAFE Josh Willie said Minister Courtney wouldn't comment on good faith negotiations or new industrial relations for TAFE staff.

"Today in Estimates, Minister Courtney failed to rule out voluntary redundancy for TAFE staff," Mr Willie said.

"She won't guarantee that the 100 new TAFE staff will be permanent and she won't confirm any decision regarding on-going employment conditions."

Mr Willie said it was becoming clear that Minister Courtney simply does not understand TAFE.

"Minister Courtney does not understand TAFE, she does not understand the government's plan to blow it up and she can't answer questions because she is simply not across her role as the responsible Minister.

"Earlier today the Minister dodged and refused to answer important education questions for Tasmanian families, students and school staff and this afternoon we have seen more of the same.

"Ms Courtney must take this portfolio seriously and fight back against her government's plan to destroy TAFE."
