Minister flies into cyclone-affected Lockhart River

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Minister Craig Crawford has visited the Lockhart River community in Far North Queensland – Tropical Cyclone Trevor's first port of call as it traversed the Cape York Peninsula.

The Minister and QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll met with Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Wayne Butcher during their visit.

Mr Crawford said the community had faced TC Trevor well prepared and with a wealth of experience behind them.

"I know that the residents in this region were prepared for this cyclone and for the wet weather they're now experiencing," he said.

"There are a lot of trees down and a lot of debris but the clean-up has well and truly started and, with the airport open, they'll be back to normal in the next few days.

"I know the hospital has some minor damage but is still open, while Lockhart State School is closed with some damage, including a tree on its roof.

"The police station and court house have also been damaged but, again, nothing serious."

Commissioner Carroll said that while TC Trevor was headed towards the Northern Territory, there were still flood watches and severe weather warnings in Far North Queensland.

"Our crews on the ground are working hard to ensure residents are safe and to help those in need," she said.

"I urge everyone in Trevor's path to heed warnings, keep up to date with the movement and severity of the cyclone, and stay inside until it has passed."

Mr Butcher said the community was working towards business as usual.

"We should have the school re-opened by next week and council workers and SES personnel are making good work clearing up the fallen trees and branches," he said.

"We were pretty well prepared for Trevor and we've come through it with very little serious damage."
