Minister Hodgson Meets Ukrainian Energy Minister

Natural Resources Canada

Today, Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, met with Ukraine's Minister of Energy, Svitlana Grynchuk, at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting in Toronto, Ontario. Minister Hodgson reaffirmed Canada's longstanding commitment to Ukraine's energy security, with Minister Grynchuk expressing gratitude for Canada's support. Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, and Canada's Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, Chrystia Freeland, also attended the meeting.

Minister Hodgson and Minister Grynchuk discussed the urgency of addressing Ukraine's energy needs in light of recent Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, and particularly as Ukraine prepares for the cold winter months. Minister Grynchuk reiterated the need for urgent equipment and natural gas supply to offset damages to critical gas infrastructure.

Minister Hodgson highlighted Canada's ongoing commitment to Ukraine, including financial support via mechanisms such as the Ukraine Energy Support Fund and other contributions through multilateral initiatives. He also noted the delegation of Canadian companies going to the Rebuild Ukraine Conference and Trade Show in Warsaw from November 13 to 14.

The two ministers underscored the G7's important role in addressing Ukraine's energy infrastructure gaps and ensuring that Ukraine's energy security remains a top priority on the international agenda, as demonstrated by the G7 statement on Ukraine's energy security.

They agreed to continue close collaboration through both bilateral engagements and multilateral fora, including the G7+ Ukraine Energy Coordination Group that Canada co-chairs alongside the European Union in 2025.

The meeting concluded with the ministers signing a Joint Declaration of Intent on Strategic Cooperation in the Energy Sector, marking future bilateral cooperation to come. Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand joined Minister Hodgson to announce $10 Million in urgent support to Ukraine's energy sector via the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.
