The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, issued the following statement:
"Today, Canada joins with the international community in celebrating the International Day for People of African Descent. This day is a time to recognize the remarkable contribution of Black communities and celebrate all the people that, with their talents, leadership and creativity, help build a strong Canada every day that makes us proud.
Our country would not be the same without the contribution of people of African descent. For generations, they have enriched our communities, shaped our history and helped build Canada's prosperity. At the same time, this day also reminds us of the work that still needs to be done. Too often, people of African descent continue to face racism, discrimination and systemic barriers.
That's why Canada's Anti-Racism Strategy, which includes more than 70 initiatives and more than $70 million in support for local projects, is focused on transforming our commitments into concrete actions and eliminating barriers in all parts of our society.
We also co-sponsored the proposal to establish the second United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent 2025-2034. This decade allows us to continue our efforts, in collaboration with Black communities and the Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion, to combat all forms of racism, including racism targeting Black people, and allow Canadians of African descent to pursue their dreams and help build Canada's future.
On this International Day for People of African Descent, I encourage all Canadians to discover the history, contributions and heritage of people of African descent. Together, let's build a Canada where inclusion, respect and equal opportunity aren't just values we defend, but a reality for everyone across the country."
