Minister Morneau Announces Appointments to Royal Canadian Mint Board of Directors

The Royal Canadian Mint brings together the history, heritage and artistry of Canadians to produce circulation and collector coins used and valued by people in Canada and around the world.

To help carry out this important mandate, and in keeping with the Government of Canada's commitment to appointing highly qualified candidates able to best serve the interests of Canadians, Finance Minister Bill Morneau today announced the appointments of Pina Melchionna and Barry Rivelis to the Board of Directors of the Royal Canadian Mint, each for terms of four years. Biographical information can be found below.

These appointments were made under the Government of Canada's new approach to Governor in Council appointments. This approach supports open, transparent and merit-based selection processes that strive for gender parity and reflect Canada's diversity, to support Ministers in making appointment recommendations for positions within their portfolio by providing them with information and referrals.

Biographical Notes

Pina Melchionna

Pina Melchionna is a lawyer and financial services executive with over 25 years of experience. She is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation, since 2017.

Ms. Melchionna has also held a variety of executive positions in the financial services sector, most recently as Executive Vice-President of Concentra Bank. She has also held executive positions in client service roles at CIBC, HSBC and Scotiabank.

Ms. Melchionna previously managed her own private legal practice for 10 years, while also serving as a sessional instructor at various colleges. She also sits and has sat on a number of boards and committees.

Ms. Melchionna holds a Bachelor of Arts from York University, a Law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and an MBA from Dalhousie University.

Barry Rivelis

Barry Rivelis is the Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy and Information Officer of Pacific Blue Cross (PBC), where he is accountable for strategy and planning, analytics, merger, acquisition and integration, enterprise governance and project delivery, and information system operations.

Prior to PBC, Mr. Rivelis was the Chief Information Officer of the Provincial Health Services Authority, Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Health Care, and before that, Vice President, Health Care at Telus Corporation, where he was instrumental in the creation of Telus Health. Before joining Telus, Mr. Rivelis was a Vice President of Cap Gemini in Vancouver and a partner with Ernst & Young in Toronto - one of the youngest consulting partners in the Canadian firm's history.

Mr. Rivelis is a Member of the Honorary Governors Council of the Vancouver Foundation. He is also a Member of the Audit Advisory Committee of the Public Guardian and Trustee British Columbia. He is a former member of the Board of the Vancouver Foundation where he was Chair of the Governance and HR and Arts and Culture Granting Committees. He is also a past Member of the Board of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Rivelis holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from York University and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business.
