Minister Ng speaks with Made in America Director Celeste Drake

Today, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, spoke with Celeste Drake, Director of Made in America in the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, as well as with labour leaders from Canada and the United States, about reinforcing the thriving economic relationship between Canada and the United States.

Minister Ng congratulated the Director on her recent appointment by the Biden administration. Meeting virtually just ahead of the first anniversary of the entry into force of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, Minister Ng acknowledged the Director’s role in helping secure U.S. labour support for the new agreement.

Minister Ng conveyed Canada’s concerns about the possible expansion of domestic content requirements in U.S. government procurement and highlighted the importance of the deeply integrated supply chains between Canada and the United States, particularly in building back better from the COVID-19 pandemic and supporting businesses, workers, and good jobs on both sides of the border.

Minister Ng noted the crucial role of collaboration on infrastructure projects and investments in ensuring growth and job creation in both countries during the post-pandemic economic recovery. She highlighted how the partnership between Canada and the United States is shaped by shared priorities for the economy, energy and the environment, and robust labour rights, as well as by a shared interest in making government investments more sustainable and inclusive.

Minister Ng reiterated Canada’s commitment to continuing the collaborative work being done under the Roadmap for a Renewed United States-Canada Partnership to ensure a sustainable and inclusive economic recovery that strengthens the middle class and supports prosperity on both sides of the border.
