Minister of National Defence statement on Canada Day

National Defence

OTTAWA - The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement for Canada Day:

"On behalf of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), I wish a Happy Canada Day to all who call this land home.

At its very best, Canada is defined by multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion. We celebrate the diverse cultures that shape, enrich, and enliven our communities-including the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples who have resided here for time immemorial.

It is also a time to reflect on our past and reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

People from all backgrounds have served in the Canadian Armed Forces with courage, compassion, and sacrifice. Their service ensures all of us can live in a free and peaceful country-and in a better world defined by these fundamental values. At home and abroad, the Canadian Armed Forces embody the best of what it means to be Canadian.

Our soldiers, sailors, aviators, and special forces members work tirelessly in the service of Canada-protecting our people and projecting our values. Whether it is assisting local communities after a natural disaster or delivering life-saving COVID-19 vaccines; whether it is helping our Ukrainian friends fight Russia's unjustifiable invasion or standing with our NATO Allies as the framework nation for the enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia, our military is always ready to help out in times of need.

This Canada Day-and every day-I encourage Canadians to reflect on the vital role CAF members have played in building the country we are proud to call home. I am deeply grateful for their service and professionalism."
