Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson and the New Brunswick Minister of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, the Honourable Ross Wetmore, discussed common priorities during their first in-person meeting on Saturday, January 19, 2019.

The Ministers talked about moving forward with the development of an aquaculture act; one that would respect provincial jurisdictions. Canada's aquaculture industry is a global leader in producing high-quality aquaculture products and this type of federal legislation would solidify Canada's commitment to growing the aquaculture sector in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Further, the Ministers discussed collaboration and improved communications on a number of areas including North Atlantic Right Whale protection measures, plastic pollution, Small Craft Harbours, abandoned or lost ghost gear, aquaculture development, climate change, experimental fisheries and the Atlantic Fisheries Fund.
