The NSW Liberals and Nationals have called on the Minns Government to stop putting politics ahead of grassroots sport, after it was revealed a local AFL club at Moore Park is still waiting for basic change room facilities while the controversial Moore Park Golf Course redevelopment proceeds.
Reports today that the Moore Park Tigers Junior AFL Club has been waiting five years for amenities, despite receiving a $1 million funding commitment in 2021, raises further concerns about the Minns Government's priorities.
Leader of the Opposition Kellie Sloane said the government's handling of the Moore Park Golf Course redevelopment showed it had completely lost sight of community expectations.
"Chris Minns must explain why his priority is carving up an incredibly popular golf course rather than clearing red tape for a junior AFL club which desperately need change rooms," Ms Sloane said.
"Labor is ignoring more than 32,000 people who want the golf course retained in its entirety, and it's now clear it's also ignoring grassroots sporting clubs that simply want the facilities they've already been promised."
"This is exactly why the Opposition will move amendments in Parliament to require all reasonable steps be taken to retain the 18-hole Moore Park Golf Course. Imagine how many local sports clubs could benefit from funding if the $50 million was redirected."
"The government should stop putting ideology ahead of community need and get on with delivering the infrastructure local families deserve."
Shadow Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said our grassroots sporting clubs should not have to fight for basic infrastructure that has already been awarded funding.
"The community is rightly frustrated after years of inaction, waiting for safe, modern facilities for their children while the Government rushes through a controversial multi-million-dollar project next door."
"The Moore Park Tigers have done everything asked of them. The Minns Government must stand with our grassroots sports clubs, and help cut through the bureaucracy to get this project built.
