Moama Lights: Finalist in NSW Tourism Awards

Murray River Council

Murray River Council's Moama Lights event has been named a finalist in the Festivals and Events category for the 2023 NSW Tourism Awards.

Now in its 33rd year, the NSW Tourism Awards celebrate excellence and innovation across the NSW tourism sector.

The Festivals and Events category recognises leisure festivals, events and exhibitions that enhance the profile and appeal of local destinations as well as creating economic impact, increased visitation and community involvement.

Moama Lights has been recognised for the positive effects the 2022 event had on visitation and activity in the Echuca Moama region.

Over 25,000 visitors passed through the newly upgraded footbridges at Moama's Horseshoe Lagoon when it ran from 31 July to 21 August last year.

Murray River Council mayor, Frank Crawley said the recognition is great for the area and testimony to the hard work of council staff, volunteers and event partners.

"The ongoing outcomes from the event have been extremely positive and beneficial to the region."

"Not only did it stimulate much-welcome economic activity, but it is now getting recognised at both a state and national level."

"Whilst this nomination covers last year's event, the success of the Moama Lights brand continues to grow, even despite us having to end the light and sounds component early this year due to rising water levels in the lagoon."

Post event surveys saw the 2022 event offer an enormous amount of economic value, with over $11 million put back into the local community. This was spread between overnight stays, dining, shopping and other local experiences.

"Moama Lights continues to deliver an exciting opportunity to offer new experiences for locals and drive visitation to our local area, and we are so pleased that this event has once again been recognised," Cr Crawley said.

"Fingers crossed for a win!"

Category winners will be announced at the NSW Tourism Awards Gala Dinner at White Bay Cruise Terminal Sydney, on Wednesday 8 November 2023.
