Modernising Narrabundah College

The ACT Government is today kicking off consultation inviting the local community to participate in the reshaping of Narrabundah College as a 21st century learning space for all students.

The ACT Government is committed to ensuring every school is a great school with infrastructure that supports high quality education.

Operating for more than 40 years, Narrabundah College in the inner south is well-loved and well-attended. Now it's time to talk about how it will operate for the next 40 years and beyond.

The 2017-18 Budget began work modernising Narrabundah College by allocating $1.2 million to remove some asbestos contaminated buildings, which were replaced with high quality, specialist transportable classrooms.

Additional funding of $23.8 million was provided by the ACT Government over four years in 2017-18 for the relocation of staff and students from the original buildings to transportable buildings, and the demolition of the affected buildings.

A further $750,000 in the 2018-19 Budget allowed the government to commence early planning and design, including community consultation, for the future facilities at this school.

Through an online scrapbook, pop-up events with interactive ideas boards at the college and in the community, theme workshops, as well as engagement with alumni and future students in surrounding primary and high schools, the community will get the chance to have their say.

The government intends for Narrabundah College to remain on the current site and will seek community views about how to best use the available space to meet future needs, within what is achievable.

The consultation will look at community connections and partnerships, facilities and amenities to assist in developing the concept plans for modernising the College. Questions to be asked include:

  • What should the building looks like?
  • How will the buildings be arranged?
  • What facilities and amenities are required to support learning?
  • What facilities are sought by the local community for wider community use?

The Government also wants to know from the community what makes Narrabundah College special to ensure those aspects are maintained and preserved through the next stages of the development.

This investment is on top of the more than $130 million the ACT Labor Government has invested in upgrading Canberra's primary schools, high schools and colleges.

This is an important opportunity to have your say on the future direction of this great public school. To learn more about the consultation and have your say, visit Modernisation of Narrabundah College – Have Your Say web page.

Consultation will close 24 November 2019.
