Mojo Power East Faces Renewable Energy Probe

We have taken successful action to wind up a liable entity under the Renewable Energy Target (RET), Mojo Power East Pty Ltd, for unpaid shortfall charges owing to the Commonwealth.

On 24 October 2025, we filed an application for an order for Mojo Power East Pty Ltd to be wound up in insolvency for outstanding debts for unpaid shortfall charges and interest relating to the 2022 and 2023 assessment years. On 25 November 2025, the Federal Court of Australia ordered that Mojo Power East Pty Ltd be wound up and our costs be reimbursed.

Mojo Power East Pty Ltd (formerly People Energy Pty Ltd) is a subsidiary company of iON Holdings Ltd, a company with a significant history of non-compliance, specifically in relation to their failure to settle debts accrued under the scheme for its subsidiaries (Mojo Power East, Mojo Power Pty Ltd, Qenergy Limited and Sanctuary Energy Pty Ltd).

Under the RET, liable entities (usually electricity retailers) must meet their obligations to surrender large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) and small-scale technology certificates (STCs) on time, or otherwise incur a shortfall charge. We will take action to recover debts from participants who fail to acquit their shortfall charge liabilities when they become due and payable.

Our proportionate approach to non-compliance includes offering help and support to those committed to doing the right thing.

We encourage participants to engage with us early if they are struggling to comply with their obligations. We will use our discretion and consider a participant's previous compliance history to offer assistance if appropriate.

We should not be seen as a line of credit and have zero tolerance for deliberate non-compliance. Failure to acquit shortfall charge-related liabilities on time will result in us pursuing recovery of outstanding debts, including in the courts where necessary.
