The Australian Research Council (ARC) has today announced Monash University as the recipient of 13 acclaimed Future Fellowships worth more than $11 million – the most of any university in Australia – as part of a collective $26 million research investment in the University by the Federal Government.
Monash researchers received this vital funding to make new discoveries in areas that will shape Australia’s future, such as earth sciences, information technology, economics and chemistry.
Monash also received $4.9 million to establish an ARC Research Hub for Smart Next Generation Transport Pavements, led by Professor Jayantha Kodikara from the Faculty of Engineering, as well as a further $4.1 million for an ARC Training Centre for the Development of Tools for Fragment Based Design, led by Associate Professor Martin Scanlon in the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Professor of Early Childhood Education, Marilyn Fleer, and structural biologist Professor James Whisstock of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences received Laureate Fellowships, totalling $6.1 million over five years.
A project, led by Professor Jian-Feng Nie from the Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with fellow Monash researchers and industry partners Baosteel Company and Magontec Limited, received an ARC Linkage grant of $460,000.
This announcement by the ARC has delivered Monash a collective $26.7 million in research funding which will be used to drive innovation at the local, national and international levels, and to facilitate industry collaboration to meet fundamental commercial challenges.
Professor Marc Parlange, Provost & Senior Vice-President at Monash, congratulated the researchers on their achievements.

Professor Ian Smith Vice Provost, (Research and Research Infrastructure) and Interim Senior Vice Provost (Research), said Monash’s formidable reputation in research was reflected in today's ARC awards and grants announcements.
