More bad news on Tasmanian jobs 17 November 2023

Tas Labor

The latest jobs data shows Tasmania is underperforming the rest of the country, and is the only state shedding jobs.

Figures from the Bureau of Statistics show Tasmania's unemployment rate is still the highest in the nation, with 1,500 jobs lost in the past six months.

The participation rate is the lowest in the nation, falling 0.5 per cent over the past six months.

The Premier and self-appointed Minister for Economic Development Jeremy Rockliff promised to make economic growth and jobs a priority when he "reset" his government three and a half months ago.

Instead, the economy has gone backwards for the past three quarters, unemployment is the worst in the nation and the budget is in record deficit.

Things are now so bad that leading economist Saul Eslake has confirmed that our economy has stalled under the Liberals and Tasmania is in a technical recession.

Jeremy Rockliff must take responsibility for the state's tanking economy and take the action needed to stop the decline.
