Digital Tools, AI Ethics Shape Modern Health Landscape

JMIR Publications

(Toronto, June 23, 2026) JMIR Publications released four News and Perspectives stories exploring the future of digital care delivery, the ongoing battle against health misinformation, developing ethical issues surrounding longevity medicine, and how equity can be build into AI systems.

Digital Tools Bridging Care Gaps in Chronic Pain Management

With over a quarter of adults experiencing chronic pain, finding effective treatments remains notoriously complex. In " Potential of Digital Tools for Chronic Pain Management ", JMIR correspondent Vanessa Nirode explores how digital innovations can be used to manage chronic pain, covering a range of novel virtual telehealth platforms such as Lin Health; digital tracking tools and wearables such as Plesio Health and Vindicara; and neuromodulation devices, which may be potentially augmented with adaptive AI to address flare-ups before they occur.

The Urgent Need to Protect Online Misinformation Research

The scientific research and funding landscape for online health misinformation has faced tremendous challenges due to recent political interference, prompting self-censorship and canceled projects. In " The Future of Online Misinformation Research: Tackling the Landscape With Integrity and Urgency ", health communication scholar and former National Cancer Institute program official Wen-Ying Sylvia Chou makes the case for online health misinformation research, despite these obstacles. She outlines three vital domains for future research priorities: uncovering the tactics of major disinformation spreaders, scaling up mitigation interventions like "prebunking" through community collaboration, and addressing root causes by facilitating meaningful, trust-building conversations to shift the public discourse. As Chou writes: "We must tackle the online information ecosystem with urgency, navigating the complexities of the moment with moral integrity."

The Ethical Risks of Longevity Medicine

As advancements in biotechnology fuel the rapid expansion of longevity medicine, there are growing concerns regarding equitable access to life-extending care. In " The Ethics of Extending Life: Longevity Medicine and Health Inequity ", JMIR correspondent Jenna Congdon explores how this prevention-focused approach's high out-of-pocket costs and required health literacy limit its longevity benefits to wealthy, well-educated populations. Congdon argues that without intentional policy frameworks, the commercialization of aging science risks deeply exacerbating existing socioeconomic health inequities. To create an ethical pathway forward, she highlights the need for diverse clinical study designs, equitable pricing strategies, stronger legal regulations, and the conscientious integration of longevity principles into broader public health systems.

Building Meaningful Equity into Health Care AI

As artificial intelligence transforms health care delivery, it risks amplifying existing health and social inequities by relying on datasets that underrepresent marginalized groups. In " Can AI in Health Care Be Truly Inclusive? ", JMIR correspondent Beth Rush covers Samira A. Rahimi, PhD's framework for equitable design at all stages of an AI system's lifestyle, and across micro, meso, and macro levels. Emphasizing that equity must be a core infrastructure rather than an afterthought, Rush notes that proactive inclusion, equity impact assessments, and policy transparency are essential to building safe and truly inclusive AI tools.
