A re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government will partner with the Hobart City Council and invest $12.5 million to build a brand-new, purpose-built basketball court facility at New Town Bay in Hobart's northern suburbs.
The site has already been secured by the Hobart City Council, which has committed to its construction, car parking, and ongoing maintenance.
Architectural plans have been drawn up, and a Development Application is in process.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said we are getting on with the job of supporting more community sporting infrastructure, right around the State.
"We know the need for more basketball courts is there following the outstanding success of the JackJumpers, and we are responding," the Premier said.
"A Basketball Tasmania State Facilities Strategy released earlier this year shows that basketball has experienced a surge in participation, and our investment will pave the way for another four courts in the Northern suburbs of Hobart.
"While the new court facility will become a home base for Hobart Phoenix, it will also be a community facility open to all, from young basketballers and school teams to adult players.
"Basketball continues to grow strongly in Tasmania, and a re-elected Liberal Government is absolutely committed to seeing this continue, with Tasmanians to benefit as a result."
While the new facilities are being built, a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government will also open the school gates and give public access to school ovals and sports courts, including indoor basketball courts.
Two Community Liaison positions will also be created to coordinate access between local sporting groups and schools, proactively reaching out to facilitate local partnerships.
We are progressing with the construction of additional community sporting infrastructure.
Across the State, we have new courts underway, including those at Claremont, Launceston, and Devonport.
The Liberals encourage Tasmanians of all ages to participate in sport because the more people who engage in physical activity, the healthier our community will be.
This election comes down to one choice: a strong Liberal team with a real plan or another merry-go-round of chaos.
Let's get on with it.
Let's finish the job for Tasmania.
