Kempsey Shire Council has been awarded grants to local understand flood behaviour and improve flood mitigation across the Macleay.

The NSW Government announced their floodplain management program grants last week with Council receiving funding offers for two projects:

  1. Stage 3 of design and investigations in improving flood immunity in the Kempsey Central Business District
  2. Central Upper Macleay Flood study

Flood immunity Kempsey CBD

This funding will help implement actions in the Kempsey Central Business District Flood Risk Management Plan 2017. The funding will look at raising an existing levee at South Kempsey and a new floodgate at the Gladstone Street underpass in West Kempsey. The goal of the Kempsey Central Business District Flood Risk Management Plan 2017 is to reduce flood impacts in the main business and commercial areas of Kempsey.

Central Upper Macleay Flood study

The Central Upper Macleay Flood Study will provide valuable data and information from the Upper Macleay River. This area is upstream of Aldavilla and Sherwood to the Kempsey and Armidale border. The study will provide a better understanding of flooding in the upper regions of the catchment and their related impacts on landowners, government, emergency agencies and Council. The study will also help ensure safe planning controls for flood prone land.

These projects will look to be delivered in the 2023-24 financial year.
