More police to target antisocial behaviour in Alice Springs

Additional police resources will be sent to Alice Springs to address antisocial behaviour after a weekend in which two people were hospitalised after being assaulted.

A 21-year-old man has been remanded in custody in relation to two separate incidents in the Alice Springs CBD on Saturday night.

A 34-year-old man was knocked unconscious and had his wallet stolen after he was surrounded by a group of offenders in a car park on Gregory Terrace just after 9pm on Saturday.

Following this incident, a security guard from a licensed venue was assaulted by a group of offenders who he had chased after one of them stole a handbag from a patron.

The 25-year-old man suffered serious facial injuries as a result of the assault.

In a separate incident, CCTV captured an assault on an unknown man on Todd Street just after 9pm.

The man was crossing the road on Todd Street around 9pm when he was knocked to the ground by a man, believed to be the same 21-year-old.

Police continue to call for the victim, or witnesses to this assault to contact them on 131 444.

Assistant Commissioner Dr Narelle Beer said additional police will be sent to Alice Springs to assist frontline members in addressing antisocial behaviour.

"What we saw was calculated intent to cause harm to innocent people who were out enjoying themselves. It is simply cowardly and dangerous behaviour," said Assistant Commissioner Dr Beer.

"This behaviour is abhorrent and completely unacceptable and we will be addressing it head on."

"Every day I'm proud to say our members, from the front line, General Duties, Crime, Strike Force Viper, Domestic Violence, Drugs and Serious Crime units conduct themselves in the utmost professional manner and work hard to make our community a safer one. They do an outstanding job."

From this weekend, members from the Northern command, Territory Mounted Unit, Dog Operations Unit and new recruits will provide a bolstered police presence in the CBD with a coordinated approach to providing police at peak hours to disrupt criminal intent.

"The community can expect to see a lot more boots on the ground with the intent to break this cycle of antisocial behaviour."
