More record results for Tasmanian tourism

Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

Tasmania's tourism industry is continuing to deliver record results, with the latest Tasmanian Visitor Survey confirming visitors are spending up big and supporting local jobs and our economy.

The indicative monthly data shows that total visitor spend in Tasmania in the year to July 2022 was $2.5 billion – a significant milestone that has been reached ahead of the scheduled target by the end of 2022.

Additionally, in the month of July alone, total visitor expenditure was a record $270.2 million, which is double the pre-COVID spend in July 2019, before the pandemic.

Our tourism sector is vitally important to our economy and to local businesses, especially in our regions, with more Tasmanians per capita employed in tourism than in any other State or Territory.

These fantastic results are a credit to everyone working in the industry who have endured a difficult few years, and are clearly bouncing back with interest.

And importantly, the strength of our tourism industry, adding billions into our economy, means we can invest more into health, housing, education, and transformational infrastructure to set our State up for decades to come.

There is no doubt Tasmania has what the world wants and we are playing our part to spread the word, with Tourism Tasmania's Off Season campaign and winter events showcasing our State and contributing to the increase in visitors from across the nation.

It also reaffirms why airlines should not reduce seat capacity in coming months, and we continue to work with them to ensure Tasmania is not disadvantaged and left off the map.
