The Kempsey Shire is on its way to become more energy efficient with 1,421 streetlights due to be switched to LED.

Kempsey Shire Council is upgrading streetlights across the area which will go a long way in reducing costs and delivering great long-term savings.

The switch to LED technology means a reduction of 486 megawatt hours and provides savings of approximately $157,0000 each year. Additionally, Council's $1,073,000 contribution to the upgrade costs will be recovered in around six years.

This means that the streetlights will require less maintenance by Essential Energy, who will also be able to respond to outages more swiftly.

The upgrade to energy efficient lighting is part of Council's Sustainability and Resilience Strategy commitment to manage and enhance natural and urban environments to become more resilient to the likely impacts of climate change.

Essential Energy will begin upgrading streetlights on Monday 21 November.
