More than $77,000 awarded to Townsville artists through RADF

Artists from across Townsville doing it tough in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic have now secured more than $77,000 in Round 2 of the 2019/2020 Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants.

RADF is a joint Queensland Arts and Townsville City Council program to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson, Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney, said 10 applications were successful in securing funding during this round.

"I'm thrilled that we were able to award grants to 10 outstanding artists and art groups during this RADF round," Cr Greaney said.

"The 10 successful applications include grants for well-known event Shakespeare Under the Stars, upcoming podcast Tides, an animation masterclass and an All Saints Day performance at St James' Anglican Cathedral."

Cr Greaney said these projects would have positive impacts on the community.

"There was a lot of diversity in the applications for this round of funding, which was fantastic to see," Cr Greaney said.

"We know how important arts and culture are to communities, and it's something that Townsville has been missing out on as we've fought against the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Now that we are beginning to see the gradual reintroduction of community events, it's exciting to know we have these projects to look forward to."

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government was proud to continue its RADF partnership with local governments with an investment of $2.08 million, through Arts Queensland, for the 2019-20 fund.

"This investment supports the delivery of hundreds of arts experiences and professional development opportunities across the state," Ms Enoch said.

"Projects funded through RADF provide pathways for learning, contribute to the creation of jobs, foster creativity and boost cultural tourism."
