Thousands of volunteers that give their time to support local community members and keep the 'Meals on Wheels' service running, will be recognised for their efforts on National Meals on Wheels Day today (Wed 27 August).
One hundred and thirty two dedicated local heroes volunteer their time to deliver meals to more than one hundred and seventy people across the city of Orange for a few hours every fortnight, or in some cases more often.
But it's more than just a meal…
It's the friendly chat for ten minutes that most clients wouldn't have had unless the Meals on Wheels volunteers stopped by.
It's the sense of independence that the clients are able to maintain by having a meal delivery service available to them.
It's the peace of mind for family and friends that their loved ones are being looked after.
It's these actions that often go unnoticed.
More than 100,000 older Australians are encouraged to eat well by delivered meal programs such as the Orange Meals on Wheels.
A variety of meals are cooked fresh in Bathurst by a number of volunteers, including disability support groups, utilising local produce, and delivered to clients on a daily basis.
Orange City Councils Services Committee Chair Cr Stephen Nugent has thanked the volunteers for their efforts.
"It will be great to see our local volunteers step into the spotlight tomorrow, as their contribution to the Orange community is recognised this National Meals on Wheels Day," Cr Nugent said.
Meals on Wheels are always on the hunt for more dedicated local volunteers that would be willing to give up just a few hours of their time every fortnight.
"It is a contribution that would make all the difference to Meals on Wheels and its ability to service the Orange community."
