Kia ora! 14-20 September is Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) when New Zealanders celebrate this official language and make extra efforts to use it more. We can do this by greeting our whānau (extended family), colleagues and patients in Māori, listening to or singing waiata (songs), or learning some new Māori words or phrases.
About 40 years ago, due to the implications of colonisation, te reo Māori was close to extinction and so began the movement toward its revitalisation. The use of te reo Māori throughout RACS documents and communications enhances the integration of Māori knowledge, supports a te ao Māori (Māori world view) and creates a sense of belonging to which Māori can connect.
