Mortlake Ferry to Close Mid-2025 for Upgrade

Mortlake Ferry Upgrade

Transport for NSW is upgrading the infrastructure at Mortlake and Putney ferry wharves. The project will maintain safety, extend the lifespan of the ferry, and preserve its historic role as Sydney's last remaining vehicle ferry crossing. Site establishment and early preparation work has started, and the ferry is expected to temporarily close in July.

The scope of the upgrade includes:

  • Replacing both concrete ramps at Mortlake and Putney
  • Raising the road level on the Putney side by 200mm to protect against high tides
  • Installing new guideposts, safety rails, scour rocks, and other embankment protection.

The original ferry handwheel will be preserved and reinstalled post-construction.

The ferry service will be fully closed for about four months so that work can be conducted on both wharves at the same time, to minimise the duration of the project and the impact on customers and the community.

Construction will take place during standard daytime hours (Monday to Saturday, weather permitting). No work will occur on Sundays or public holidays. Drivers can detour via Ryde Bridge during the closure. Pedestrians and cyclists can catch the F3 ferry service between Kissing Point and Cabarita or check Trip Planner for alternative route options.

Measures will be in place to minimise noise, environmental and heritage impacts, and Transport for NSW will provide community updates throughout the project.
