Motorcyclist fatalities in 2023 climbing

Sadly, motorcyclist deaths in Queensland in 2023 have already exceeded previous years, with 51 lives lost as of August 11, compared with 40 at the same time in 2022.

In Queensland, 31 per cent of road fatalities as of July 2023 were motorcyclists, far above the national average.

Sadly, we know many of these deaths were preventable, with excessive speed often a contributing factor.

Police are reminding motorcyclists to focus on safe-riding.

  • Ride to the conditions.
  • Don't ride tired and for long rides, take regular breaks.

Whether a motorcyclist is an experienced rider or starting out, they should be aware that they have fewer protections than other road-users and that they are far more likely to die or suffer serious injuries as a result of a crash.

And all motorists; be on the lookout for other road-users, check your blind spots and make sure you indicate before changing lanes or turning.
