Moulamein Flood Study Draft Open for Public Review

Murray River Council

Murray River Council has endorsed the Draft Moulamein Flood Study Review, with the community now invited to provide comment.

The study, developed in conjunction with VMS Engineering, provides updated technical, planning, and emergency response information to help manage and mitigate flood risks in Moulamein and surrounding areas.

Mayor, Cr John Harvie said the review was critical in ensuring the community remains well-informed and prepared for future flood events, particularly after the significant 2022 Edward River flood, which exceeded previous recorded levels.

"Despite the comprehensive data used in the previous Moulamein Flood Study (2019), the town has since experienced its largest recorded levels in the Edward River during the 2022 flood event."

"Therefore, the draft review incorporates updated modelling using current guidelines and new data from the 2022 flood to better understand flood behaviour around Moulamein," Cr Harvie said.

The study includes revised hydrologic and hydraulic modelling for both riverine and overland flooding, updated floodplain mapping for various flood scenarios, and analysis of levee performance and flood hazards across the town. Importantly, the findings will inform future emergency response planning, land use controls, and community preparedness.

In the early stage of the review, the community were invited to offer local knowledge, photos or any additional information to support the project.

A Community Reference Committee was also formed, and community consultation had been conducted to identify flood-prone areas.

Cr Harvie is now encouraging the community to review the updated flood mapping and findings.

"It is essential that residents and landowners take the time to view the updated flood maps and information and provide comments, ensuring the study reflects local knowledge and experiences."

The Draft Moulamein Flood Study Review is available for viewing via councils Your Say platform: www.yoursay.murrayriver.nsw.gov.au

It will also be supported by a community drop-in session where the community can ask questions or provide feedback, photos or local information.

The date and time of the drop-in session will be publicised in the coming weeks.

Community feedback will be reviewed and considered for the final study, ensuring it remains locally relevant.

Submissions close 25 August 2025.

The Draft Moulamein Flood Study Review is supported by funding from the NSW State Floodplain Management Program.
