Multiple Drink Drivers Charged At Gympie

Gympie Police are reminding motorists of the dangers of driving under the influence, after charging five people with drink driving during random breath tests overnight on Saturday, 14 March.

Around 9.10pm, a 21-year-old Gympie man on his green P plates was intercepted on Calton Terrace in Gympie and allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.088%.

Just before 11.30pm, a 54-year-old Curra woman was intercepted on Exhibition Road in Southside where she allegedly blew 0.066%.

Ten minutes later on Tozer Street in Gympie, a 24-year-old man allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.123%. He was also charged with unlicenced driving.

At 11.50pm, a 28-year-old Carters Ridge man was intercepted on Reef Street in Gympie where he allegedly blew 0.084%.

Finally, at 2.30am on Sunday 15 March, a 53-year-old Curra woman allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.103% when she was intercepted on Mellor Street in Gympie.

Wide Bay Police District Duty Officer Acting Senior Sergeant Reegan Cunningham said the number of drivers charged in one night was deeply disappointing.

"These were all from random breath tests, not from a static site," he said.

"This reckless behaviour not only endangers the lives of those behind the wheel but also puts the safety of every other road user at risk. It is simply unacceptable."

Acting Senior Sergeant Cunningham said road safety is everyone's responsibility and choosing to drink and drive can have devastating consequences.

"Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence, and it will not be tolerated. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep our roads safe and hold offenders accountable," he said.

"We urge everyone in Gympie to make the right choice - if you're drinking alcohol, don't drive. Plan ahead, organise a designated driver, or use alternative transport options. Together, we can prevent tragedies and ensure that everyone gets home safely."
