Murder charge over Tweed Heads serious assault

A man has been charged with murder over another mans' death on the state's Far North Coast last week.

About 6pm on Wednesday 15 May 2019, a group of people were at a unit on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads West, when a physical altercation occurred between two men – aged 54 and 47 – who are known to each other.

Police will allege the younger man assaulted the older man several times.

Emergency services attended and the injured man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition; however, he died on Wednesday 22 May 2019.

The 47-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene shortly after the alleged assault, was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Following further inquiries by detectives from Tweed/Byron Police District, with the assistance of the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, the man was rearrested about 12.50pm (Saturday 25 May 2019).

The Tweed Heads man was charged with murder and refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today (Sunday 26 May 2019).
