National Climate Risk Assessment Report: Bayside

Bayside Council Mayor Edward McDougall used a Mayoral Minute at the Council Meeting on Wednsday 24 September to acknowledge the release of the National Climate Risk Assessment and highligt the action Bayside is taking to address climate risk.

The Report highlights the extreme urgency of the effects of climate change and reinforces the need to combat global warming and reduce emissions.

Key findings of the Report relevant to Bayside include:

  • More frequent and extreme weather events like floods, fires and cyclones in the next 25 years
  • Increased coastal flooding risks and rising sea levels by 2050
  • Intense heatwaves posing a serious risk to vulnerable community members.

The Report also identifies the responsibilities of Local Government in managing risks to public assets and service delivery, as well as helping local communities and businesses to adapt.

Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall said

"We are committed to working alongside our community to identify and respond to the growing risks of local climate change," Mayor edward McDougall said.

"Council's flood studies give us a better understanding of flood-prone areas and our Foreshore Management Plan outlines a comprehensive and sustainable approach to protecting our coastline and supporting long-term resilience."

"We will continue to collaborate with key partners to strengthen climate resilience and protect our natural environment."

"We are working closely with the NSW EPA as well as relevant federal and state departments. We are supporting vital initiatives to protect waterways, enhance biodiversity, and preserve our natural assets through partnerships with Georges Riverkeeper, Cooks River Alliance, and the Sydney Coastal Councils Group."

On Saturday 18 October 2025, Council will hold its inaugural environment and sustainability event Project Planet at day at Cahill Park, Wolli Creek on the banks of the Cooks River.

"This event will include interactive activities, workshops, and expert panel discussions highlighting our commitment to environmental leadership and building a more resilient Bayside for future generations.
