The City of Hobart's innovative approach to community-led climate action has been recognised on the national stage, with the Hobart Climate Assembly receiving the National Stakeholder Engagement Award at the Planning Institute of Australia's Awards for Planning Excellence announced last night.

The award celebrates initiatives that demonstrate best practice in public engagement, resulting in meaningful collaboration and improved planning or social outcomes.

The judges remarks:

"This project represents a remarkable example of community-led engagement and collaborative planning in addressing climate change."

And:

"Ultimately, the project's outputs promise to make a substantial and lasting impact on Council projects, particularly in shaping future climate change strategies. This initiative exemplifies the power of community-driven action, and the judges are proud to recognise its exceptional contribution to both climate policy and community engagement."

A first for Tasmania, the Hobart Climate Assembly was the culmination of a year-long process to develop a new Climate Strategy for the city. The Assembly convened 33 randomly selected residents, reflecting a representative cross-section of Hobart's population, to deliberate on climate issues and provide recommendations to Council.

The Assembly's recommendations are now helping to shape the City's climate policies and actions, ensuring that Hobart's response to climate change is both ambitious and inclusive.

Separately, the City of Hobart has been named on the CDP A-List, joining 111 cities worldwide recognised for strong climate action and transparency. The A-List highlights cities that are leading the way in reducing emissions and preparing for climate change.

Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds:

"This award recognises the incredible commitment of our community to tackling climate change together.

"The Hobart Climate Assembly brought together a diverse group of citizens to help guide our response to one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

"Their work has laid the foundation for a climate strategy that is not only evidence-based but deeply informed by the values and priorities of our community.

"This process has shown how we can build trust in democratic processes, empower citizens, and foster leadership within our community.

"It's a model for how local governments can work hand-in-hand with their communities to create lasting, positive change.

"The City is committed to now delivering its Climate Ready Hobart Strategy and is continuing to work closely with the community to do this."
