National Weather Forecast: Showers Continue In NSW

BOM
Hello, with your National Weather Forecast, as we have a look at the weather for tomorrow, that's Thursday, the 31st of July. First, a look at the synoptic map. And we can see a low pressure system and trough over the Tasman Sea. That's pushing rain and showers onto the New South Wales coast. Sea surface temperatures off the coast of New South Wales are relatively warm, so that's providing a little bit of an extra moisture boost.

Showers also for inland parts of South Australia and the Northern Territory, and then into the afternoon and evening, we see a few showers developing across northern inland parts of New South Wales, as well as north-west Queensland and the northern Queensland tropics as well. But elsewhere we are under the influence of quite a stubborn high pressure system that is extending its influence down towards the south-east of the country. So Tasmania and Victoria will see a little bit more settled conditions as we head into Thursday and settled also across the west. But that will finally get a bit of a move on as we head into Friday, and that will allow for the next cold front to move up over Western Australia towards the weekend.

So now a state-by-state look, starting off in Queensland. Cool in the morning with patchy frost, but we are expecting a sunny day to follow across the south-east of the state. Cloud will build to the southern interior though, there's a slight chance of a very light shower close to the New South Wales border. Cloud will also thicken across the north-west of the state. A few showers are possible between Mount Isa down towards Longreach. Showers also for the Cairns tropical coast and the Atherton Tablelands. Those showers will become more widespread and extend down the coast as we head into Friday. Temperatures a little bit cooler than average under cloud cover in the west. Warm across the north and the Cape York Peninsula. In Brisbane, mostly sunny, with a top of 21°C. Possible shower in Cairns with 29.

In New South Wales, rain and showers continue to stream onto the coast as well as gusty winds. We could see moderate rainfall totals for the Illawarra, Sydney and also the Hunter, but into the afternoon and evening that rain will gradually ease back towards showers. Showers also increasing for the north of the state. North of about Ivanhoe with a few millimetres possible from the afternoon. Otherwise it will be quite a cool day again with maximum temperatures generally below average. Sydney, showers and rain with a top of 16°C. 12°C in Canberra and we'll see a few snow flurries above about 1000m across the Snowy Mountains.

Now to Victoria. Patchy fog and frost south of the divide in the morning. We are expecting a dry day for most of the state. The exception being through Gippsland with a few showers pushing through. We could see a few showers push into Melbourne and the north-east of the state into the afternoon. Snow is possible above about 1000m. In Melbourne, cool start with just 5°C. Slight chance of a shower with the top of 14. One better in Mildura, sunny with a top of 15.

For Tasmania, you will see a cold start with many locations dipping below 0°C through the inland, and we will see a bit of fog, but the cloud will stick around across the south, and just a slight chance of a shower near the coast. It'll be a dry day across the north of the state. For Hobart, cloudy, very slight chance of a shower with 12°C. Two better in Launceston with a top of 14.

In South Australia now, cool in the morning in the south-east of the state with patchy fog and also frost. You can see a few showers along the coast but not expecting too much in the way of rainfall. Just a few showers are possible for Kangaroo Island and the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula, but into the afternoon we will see showers building across northern interior parts of South Australia, and for areas north of about Woomera. These are typically arid parts of the state. So far this month have seen above average rainfall. We could see another 2 to 5mm for those areas, but cool conditions, 15 or 16°C. 15 also in Adelaide after a cool morning.

For Western Australia, we will see patchy fog and frost again across the South West Land Division, but that will clear to a mostly dry day. Just a few showers about the south coast and also the far south-west of the state. Perth, a cool start, 5°C. A top of 20 would be the warmest day in more than 2 weeks, and we will see warmer temperatures for the Gascoyne and also up into the Pilbara.

Finally, for Northern Australia, cold in the interior, dropping down to 0°C. A few showers for the Barkly and up towards Tennant Creek and also a few showers for the Top End. But we are looking at a partly cloudy day in Darwin with a top of 32, and for Broome and Port Hedland it will be your warmest day in more than 1 week.
